Blondie Interview

HB: One for the guys. Ms. Harry has always stated that Blondie is a band - it's not a one-woman show. That said, this lady can walk into a room and flashbulbs pop. Any jealousy that's, you know, that this has always happened? Any rivalry there?

Chris Stein: I for one, you know, just don't - I know for a fact that I don't look as good. So I - it just seems logical to me.

Clem Burke: I think, obviously when I wanted to be in a rock band, being a drummer, the first thing I knew was, I need an amazing lead singer. And when I met Debbie I knew that I had found one. So it's all very obvious to me, all that. I think we all have our place within the context of the band, and we're all recognized for our contributions. So that's really how I feel about it.

HB: But what do you think it was that, got you into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, that made you deserving of being inducted?

Deborah Harry: I don't know. I guess hanging out long enough, you know, you sort of - I don't know - they have to start looking at you. I guess, you know, there were a lot of people that should be in there still. I don't know. We were - we did some pretty exciting things with our music.

You know, we did some pretty inventive things and we sort of broke some ground and, you know, came out of a really powerful time for - in music. It was a really good transitional period, and we've lasted, you know. Our music has stood the test of time.

HB: How do you feel about heading out on the road with the New Cars this summer?

Deborah Harry: No we never toured in the past, and I am looking forward to this. I think it's going to be a very powerful show, and probably one of the most compatible bills that we've ever been on!

HB: Did you ever tour with The Cars in the past?

Clem Burke: Well we've never shared a stage, but we did share an accountant back when actually. But you know, actually for myself I've been friends especially with Elliott, the guitarist of the Cars -- Elliott Easton -- for quite some time. And I think I agree with Debbie. For people that wanting to come out and just hear a lot of great songs and see a lot of great performers, you know, this is a perfect bill. We've always been searching for a compatible double bill and this seems like this will be a good one.

HB: What can we expect differently in this tour this year? Are any songs you playing from new stuff you're working on?

Deborah Harry: No we have a couple of fresh arrangements - treatments. We brought back In the Flesh and have given it a completely different approach and attitude. And then we are probably going to try to do a fresh approach on Good Boys, which is on the DVD-CD thing.

Chris Stein: Maybe a couple cover songs that we added and a few things here and there.

Deborah Harry: Couple, yeah, couple cover songs. We usually add cover songs!
