Brandie Carlile Interview

Written By Cary Barnhard

Brandie Carlile's self-titled debut CD is a mature work of country tinged pop that evokes Patsy Cline while allowing Brandie to maintain an identity all her own.

HB: You got to perform with James Taylor?

BC: Oh my god, it was so amazing! James Taylor is such a nice guy! I played before him, I got a standing ovation, then he got on stage, he had me come back out on the stage and sing "How Sweet it is to be Loved by You" with him. So that was like extremely cool. And, he signed my guitar.

HB: You live in a cabin by yourself?

BC: I do!

HB: What's that like?

BC: It's cool! A cabin is putting it modestly. It's a pretty big log cabin out on five acres the North West; I'd say a half hour southeast of Seattle. Seattle is like one of in those places where you can drive half an hour and like be seeing bears and stuff! So, that's kind of where I live.

HB: Do you think that inspires you in any way?

BC: Absolutely! We recorded a lot of the record here at my house, actually.

HB: Do you think that's different than recording in a studio?

BC: These days you can set up everything in your living room and get the same sound you get out of a studio. Plus, I've got like thirty foot vaulted ceilings, and I live in I live in a house with nothing but wood, so it sounded really good.

HB: So that's a more inspirational setting?

BC: Yeah! There's definitely more to do. Like the first day we were recording, I was tracking with Tim, one of the twins, and Phil was left to his own devices. I came outside, and he had like his shirt off, he had built a bow and a spear and had dirt all over his face!

HB: So, what's it like being in a band with twins?

BC: It's great most of the time. Their harmonies are beautiful because they're brothers. Their songwriting styles are similar and they get along with each other really well, so that definitely takes a lot of the drama out of the band. The only problem is I'm always out-voted! Like, if we're on the road and I want to eat at Olive Garden and they want to eat at Denny's, we end up at Denny's because it's two against one!
