Adam Bravin and Justin Warfield comprise She Wants Revenge. Their self titled debut album is a dark yet danceable masterpiece. Adam took time out from touring to talk to Heat Beat.
HB: How did you get started in music?
AB: My father was a musician, he always had a studio at the house as I grew up. Both my parents are fans of music, so I grew up with a very eclectic mix of music around the house. There was always Jazz, Classical, Rock, Soul, Funk, lots of different types of music to listen to as I grew up. When I was about 15 I became a DJ, actually met Justin at one of the first parties I ever DJ'd. From there I started meeting people in Las Angeles, Producers and other DJ's and learned how to produce beats. I studied and practiced and started making Hip Hop beats, it evolved a little further and I started making beats that were more musical for singers, and slowly but surely worked my way to the point where we are now.
HB: How did She Wants Revenge come about?
AB: Like I said, Justin and I met when we were young. We kept bumping into each other over the years, each of us kind of pursuing our individual musical careers. I would play him what I was working on and he would play me what he was working on, we'd talk about getting together and working on something together, and it never really happened until a couple of years ago when a mutual friend who had trying to get us to work together for the last 10 years, we were at her house at a barbecue. She said, "You guys should just leave now and go work on some music." And we were like "Yeah, okay, sure." And she was like, "No! Go to the studio right now!" So we did, we went to Justin's house. And the first stuff we started working on, because we both have a Hip Hop background was Hip Hop. That was the language we had, it was very easy to jump into. We decided after a couple weeks, coming from the golden age of Hip Hop from the late '80's to the early '90's that our hearts just weren't in Hip Hop like they used to be, it just wasn't as much fun for us. So I did a beat that was a little more up tempo, a little darker and had some keys on it. It was something different than I had ever done before. Justin heard it and was like, "Wow! I want to take that back to my house and put some guitars on it and sing." He did just that, and that song became a b side on our single.
HB: Was there interest in what you were doing right away?
AB: No. We did about half the record before there was ever a record label involved. None of this was expected or planed, we just wanted to make music that we felt like we could play at some of the clubs that we were DJ'ing at. It wasn't until a lot later that we started getting radio play.
HB: How are you enjoying your success now?
AB: Well, It's exciting and a little overwhelming. It's nice, we've both been in the music industry for a long time and have come close to becoming successful or relatively successful, and it's really nice for me personally. I've been a DJ for a long time playing other people's music, it's really exciting to get up on stage every night and get a positive reaction from a crowd based on playing music that Justin and I wrote together. It's amazing!
HB: That must be a really different feeling.
AB: Yeah, completely! When I'm DJ'ing at a club and people are going crazy and dancing, it's because I know what songs to play and what order to play them in. It's really a technical thing and a selection thing. But, when people are giving you that same reaction based on something that you wrote it's very, very exciting.
